Carlik Jones scored 13 of his 17 points in the second half and David Johnson added 17 as host Louisville overcame No. 19 Virginia Tech scoring the game's first 11 points to upset the Hokies 73-71 on Wednesday night.

Virginia Tech rallied late, getting a chance for the win on the game's final possession, but Hunter Cattoor missed a deep 3-pointer at the buzzer.

Jalen Cone's 23 points led Virginia Tech.

The Cardinals (8-1, 3-0 ACC) won their fourth straight game and have won all six home games this season. After a slow start, they took a five-point lead into halftime and led by as many as 14 points in the second half.

Virginia Tech (8-2, 2-1) played for the first time in a week after its game against Virginia scheduled for last Saturday was postponed due to a positive COVID-19 test in the Cavaliers program.

The Hokies played a true road game for the first time in more than a month and had their four-game winning streak end.

The Cardinals beat Virginia Tech for the 17th straight time. The Hokies haven't won in the series since 1991.

The Hokies cut the Cardinals' lead to six, 52-46, on a Nahiem Alleyne jumper, only to have Louisville go back up 59-48. Virginia Tech made it a six-point game again, 59-53, on Cone's fifth 3-pointer of the game with 7:58 to play.

On the Hokies' first chance to make it a three-point game, Cone threw a pass off Keve Aluma's hands for a turnover. But after a missed free throw, Cattoor hit a floater in the lane and was fouled.

His free throw made it a 72-69 game with 1:07 to play.

Jae'lyn Withers missed a dunk at the other end, but the Cardinals retained possession. They couldn't score, and Virginia Tech had one chance to tie the game or make it a one-point game.

Aluma made a pair of free throws with 6.6 seconds left, but Johnson made one for the Cardinals at the other end for the 73-71 Louisville lead.
